Series using RC 390 Cup bikes intended to provide arena for young aspiring professional racers
motoamerica announces ktm rc cup series
The newly created MotoAmerica series led by three-time 500cc Grand Prix World Champion Wayne Rainey and former racer/Team Roberts team manager Chuck Aksland and KTM North America jointly announced the addition of the KTM RC Cup series to selected rounds of the 2015 MotoAmerica AMA/FIM North American Motorcycle Road Racing Championship. The KTM RC Cup is a spec class intended to give young up-and-coming roadracers a starting point as they progress into professional roadracing in the US. Utilizing KTM RC 390 Cup racebikes with tightly controlled technical specifications, the class will be open to 14 - 22 year-old racers; MotoAmerica and the AMA are currently developing the licensing requirements, as Rainey previously told Sport Rider that "it's still going to be run as an amateur class inside the national class. We feel it's important to get these guys some exposure."
“One of our main goals in creating MotoAmerica was to find new talent and this is the start of that,” three-time 500cc World Champion Wayne Rainey said in the MotoAmerica press release. “This is going to give a lot of young riders the opportunity to feel the excitement of racing at a professional event on top-level KTM RC 390 motorcycles while competing for a National Championship. The KTM RC Cup is also going to give the teams a chance to see new talent in a competitive environment. Our goal is to give these riders the opportunity to move up through our championship classes in MotoAmerica with a goal of making it to the World Championships.”
Like many World Championship spec series, the engines of the KTM RC 390 Cup bikes will be sealed to maintain equality. Engine teardowns at the race events, rebuilds between races, and ECU checks will be performed by HMC Racing (the Wisconsin-based team that runs the Austrian company's Superbike effort in the US) technicians. It should also be noted that the RC 390 Cup bikes will be sold to dealers and consumers as ready-to-race motorcycles; production road-legal RC 390s will not be eligible for the series.
As part of the well-thought-out MotoAmerica doctrine, KTM will collaborate with HMC Racing at each of the events to provide a pit area with customer hospitality as well as technical and parts support for all RC Cup participants. Professional roadracing stars such as KTM factory superbike rider Chris Fillmore will be on hand to give young RC Cup racers advice and tips as well.
